One of the best ways you can help the environment is by buying food from your local farmer's market. The food is generally organically grown, which means no synthetic fertilizers or herbicides/pesticides were used to grow the food. This in turn means sustainable agricultural practices are being used to grow the food instead of the norm in today's factory farming which is quite the opposite with an abundance of fertilizers and poisonous pesticides being sprayed on the food numerous times before it actually enters your kitchen. This use of pesticides and fertilizers is detrimental to our ecosystem. A great movie on the subject of factory farmed food and it's negative impact on our environment is The Future of Food. It can be watched for free at http://www.hulu.com/watch/67878/the-future-of-food.

By going to buy food at your local farmer's market, you are also reducing your carbon footprint. Did you know that the average store-bought tomato travels roughly 1500 miles before reaching your dinner plate? The food purchased at your farmer's market is always local and always in season. Buying food that is not in season and not locally grown means that it must be shipped great lengths which takes a lot of energy and carbon emissions just to reach your local store. Shopping at your local farmer's market can have a great impact on the way you view food and the environment and your relation to it. The food tastes better too! You can greatly reduce your carbon footprint and environmental impact by shopping at your local farmer's market.
